Chapter 58 Pretending
The battlefield had yet to quiet down. The echoes of the battle had long since reached the town\'s outskirts and even filtered in through a bit but Zayn didn\'t pay this any more attention.
He was more interested in the soul particles that swept through his body in an uncontrolled manner and the goods in his surroundings.
Since his Spirits were recovering inside the Grimoire of the Ancient, their weapons and the black bandages they wore to conceal their identity had been left behind.
Zayn collected the large iron mace, the karambit knuckles, the black bandages, and the broken teardrop shield before he turned his attention to the remains of the Human Skeleton.
"I am curious about your past, but I doubt that I will get to know a lot about you now that you\'re dead," He mumbled to the pile of bones that had once been a powerful Skeleton with one Soulring. He collected the Skeleton\'s Armor and the Dao Saber which he stored inside his expandable pouch.
Afterward, he took a look at the utterly destroyed Core of the Undead before he shook his head.
\'You were a real nuisance.\'
Now that he was done fighting, he allowed the others to do their task as well. Zayn retreated to the town rather than joining the other fights. He was having problems controlling his body properly since the refined soul particles within his body seemed to want his life harder for some reason instead of letting him take a relieved breath.
If he were to fight in his current condition, he wouldn\'t even be able to fight two dozen Goblin Skeletons at the same time!
When he entered the town, he was greeted heartily. It was easy to tell that Zayn was utterly exhausted. He could hardly move even though he didn\'t show any signs of external wounds. Nobody judged him for retreating to the town since the Scouts had already reported the destruction of the Undead Army\'s left flank.
Zayn nodded his head faintly when he heard their greetings but he mostly ignored them. Heading to the Adventurer Hall, it was only a matter of time until he encountered the woman who had noted down the information about him and his \'group\' before they were all dumped on the battlefield against the Undead Army.
"You and your team did an amazing job! Thank you for greatly contributing to the protection of the town. We\'ve prepared rooms and food for everyone…has your entire team returned and are you all willing to sleep in one big room, or…is that not necessary?" The female staff member asked carefully, or so it seemed at the first glance.
\'If you want to know whether my team is alive or not, just ask…\' Zayn thought without uttering a word for a moment.
"Our team is complete but none of us will be able to fight for the next few days. If more waves of the undead were to attack we won\'t be able to participate in the fight. Give us the large room please and send food over to the room if possible…and a bucket of water, I\'m sweating buckets…" He added wearily, not really wanting to continue his conversation with the female staff.
He was not sure how long his Spirits would take to recover from being cut in half, thus he didn\'t state a specific date when speaking to the female staff. Zayn was also careful to reveal just enough information to prevent the staff member from prying further without actually mentioning anything that could be used against him.
The female staff member nodded her head obediently, but a sideways glance at her told him that she was rolling her eyes.
\'If you\'re not thankful for my help, don\'t pretend otherwise, girl.\' He grumbled in his mind, wondering if she had rolled her eyes because he asked her to bring food and water to his room, or if it was because of his latter comment.
At the end of the day, Zayn didn\'t mind the reason for the staff\'s behavior or attitude as long as she would do what he wanted. That was what she did by showing him his room in the Inn that was right next to the Adventurer Hall. After Zayn sat down on the soft bed inside the large room that was given to him, he took a few deep breaths and materialized the Grimoire of the Ancient in front of him.
He turned to the page where the emblems of his four Spirits were located and took a glance at the intensity of the emblems\' color.
By the time he was done observing, his food and the bucket of water had arrived. Zayn accepted everything without giving the servants a chance to look inside the room before he started to feast on the meals that had been prepared for his group of three.
He was in dire need of nutrition, especially now that his strength was bound to increase by leaps and bounds. Once Zayn had gobbled down everything, his stomach was filled to the brim and he was finally ready to pay more attention to the uncontrollable refined soul particles that surged through his body.
It took him quite a while but he was slowly getting some control over the refined soul particles which he strung into a line to queue up to enter his heart one by one instead of being bombarded by them all at once.
While Zayn was focused on annexing the soul particles that were already inside his body, the battle outside continued. There was not much left of the undead army but it didn\'t need many strong Undead to wreak havoc, to begin with.
The Zombified Gorillas were not yet killed and they continued rampaging through the defensive lines of the Blessed. However, instead of even considering attacking the town where most life force was gathered, the Zombified Gorillas attacked the Blessed.
Without hesitation, the Undead monsters tore apart the Blessed when the opportunity presented itself. The Zombified Gorillas weren\'t intelligent in any way. Their fighting style was solely reliant on their wild instincts and the fact that the word \'pain\' didn\'t exist in their vocabulary.
They were well aware of their advantages and disadvantages and the monsters made use of it as they killed more than two dozen C-rank Adventurers before their lives were taken as well.
On the other hand, Zayn was fighting with himself or his body to be precise.
He had nearly torn his body apart the moment he lost control of a batch of refined soul particles.
